Scotland 2030: A Citizen’s Income?

Scotland's Futures Forum continues its spring 2019 programme of events with a discussion this evening on the idea of a citizen’s income, featuring new research and an expert perspective from Finland.

With predictions of social and economic upheaval brought about by technological and environmental change, could a citizen’s income reduce poverty and increase people’s control over their lives? Using new research from Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities and a view from the Finnish basic income experiment, this event looked at whether citizen’s income is a realistic and affordable solution for the future.

Dr Katherine Trebeck - Scotland 2030: A Wellbeing Economy?

In conjunction with the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Fair Work Committee, the Futures Forum held a seminar on the idea of Scotland as a wellbeing economy.

The seminar was chaired by Gordon Lindhurst MSP, convener of the Committee, and featured a presentation from Dr Katherine Trebeck, Policy and Knowledge Lead for the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Scotland, on the concept of and reasons for a wellbeing economy, and the work of WEAll Scotland.

Cathy McCulloch - Scotland’s Futures Forum’s Scotland 2030 Programme

Through 20 years of working at the Children’s Parliament, Cathy was uniquely placed to report on how children view Scotland. Generally, children feel that Scotland is doing well in how it delivers services to children, with most children reporting that they feel loved and cared for, while many are also excited by Scotland’s landscape and history. However, the picture is more complex for many of the children the Children’s Parliament work with.

At the launch of Scotland’s Futures Forum’s Scotland 2030 Programme, singer, songwriter and essayist Karine Polwart tells three imagined news stories from 2030, musing on the effect of automation on human dignity, how the tension between a desire for solitude and the need to stay connected digitally might play out in a country like Scotland, and the power relationships between people as data generators and companies as data analysts in a world where our lives are increasingly defined by 'datafication'.
